NEW SOCIAL OUTREACH INITIATIVE LAUNCHED: The Archbishop of St Andrews & Edinburgh has marked Scotland’s national day by launching a new social outreach initiative, Caritas Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh. “Scotland is a country of great peace and prosperity, beauty and bounty, and yet ours is also a land where too many go without: without opportunity, without dignity, without hope,” said Archbishop Leo Cushley, 30 November, St Andrew’s Day. HOLY MASS & CONFESSION FINDER APP LAUNCH: Beneath the dome of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome and amid the skirl of the Scottish bagpipes, Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews & Edinburgh has unveiled what is thought to be the world’s first interactive, GPS-powered, Holy Mass and Confession finder app. “This is a little bit of smart technology that could make a big impact on how the the Catholic Church brings the mercy of God and the joy of the Gospel to our contemporary world,” said the Archbishop, Tuesday 23 November in Rome. A TRIBUTE TO AUDREY NEWTON RIP: Archbishop Leo Cushley has paid tribute to the late Audrey Newton (1958-2016) whose Requiem Mass took place Friday 7 October, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Audrey was a well-known and well-respected educator who taught for many years at St Mary’s Primary in Bathgate. She was also one of the main authors of the sacramental preparation programme for the Archdiocese. “Audrey taught what she lived because she passionately lived what she taught,” said the Archbishop in a letter addressed to the mourners gathered at St Mary’s in Bathgate. A NEW ALTAR FOR ST NINIAN’S: This week's Scottish Catholic Observer carries the story of the recent consecration of a new altar at Our Lady & St Ninian in Bannockburn. “The altar, by the all the dignity we show it, speaks of Christ being among his people just as God was in the temple in ancient times - that is why it is such a solemn occasion when we consecrate an altar,” explained Archbishop Cushley, 16 September, the day of the altar's consecration and, appropriately, the Feast of St Ninian. SACRED SCRIPTURE IN SCHOOL: One of the primary purposes of teaching children to read is to introduce them to the Sacred Scriptures so that they can lead holier and happier lives – that was the message of Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews & Edinburgh recently to a group of newly qualified teachers. “It’s important to teach young people to read, not simply so they can get a job, not simply so that they can read Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter but so that they can know and love Christ in the Scriptures – that’s a much higher reason,” said the Archbishop 30 September, the Feast of St Jerome. DOUBLE ORDINATION JOY: Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews & Edinburgh says a vocation to the priesthood is a path to happiness and fulfilment for those who respond generously to the call. “Throughout my own life, I have found priests to be among the happiest, most fulfilled, most dedicated people I know, and I am proud to be one of them. There’s nothing quite like it, and I mean that in a good way,”  said Archbishop Cushley, 24 June. Read the Full Story
