Ordained priest 3 April 1965 by the Archbishop and Metropolitan of St Andrews & Edinburgh, Gordon Joseph Cardinal Gray. Curate Holy Cross, Trinity (1965 - 66); chaplain St Columba’s Secondary School, Dunfermline and assistant St Bride's, Cowdenbeath (1966 - 71); curate St Patrick’s, Kilsyth (1972 - 75); curate St Mary’s, Bathgate (1975 - 78); spiritual director St Andrew’s College, Drygrange (1978 - 80); rector St Mary’s College, Blairs (1980 - 85); nominated Metropolitan Archbishop of St Andrews & Edinburgh 30 May 1985; ordained by Gordon Joseph Cardinal Gray, St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh 5 August 1985; Apostolic Administrator Diocese of Argyll and the Isles (1996 - 99); created Cardinal Priest of the title of SS Joachim & Anne ad Tusculanum 21 October 2003; member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications; Member of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People.
